GIANT 'Real Time' TELESCOPE CONNECTS LONDON TO NYC
LONDON, England (CNN) -- As the first splinters of sunlight spread their warmth on the south bank of the River Thames on Thursday, it became clear that after more than a century, the vision of Victorian engineer Alexander Stanhope St. George had finally been realized.
The Telectroscope lets Londoners and New Yorkers see each other in real time.
1 of 3 In all its optical brilliance and brass and wood, there stood the Telectroscope: an 11.2-meter-(37 feet) long by 3.3-meter-(11 feet) tall dream of a device allowing people on one side of the Atlantic to look into its person-size lens and, in real time, see those on the other side via a recently completed tunnel running under the ocean. (Think 19th-century Webcam. Or maybe Victorian-age video phone.)

THE BLACK MATRIX-the War Against Black America
WWW.DIVINEBLACKTRUTH.ORG
Over the past 500 years, European ruling elites have always used methods of psychological manipulation and control upon their African victims [as first discussed from an African perspective by the Nigerian scholar Chinweizu (1987) in his classic Decolonizing the African Mind and from an African American perspective in the Willie Lynch letters narratives (1992)]
Today this racist tradition of the mental minipulation [“mental” colonization] of Blacks secretly continues even now within the United States. It has been modified into a more contemporary and stealthy design that provides a more socially acceptable means of meeting this traditional objective.
As a means of ensuring that it’s White dominance and controlled is maintained, America’s societal white ruling elites secretly implemented its largest ever covert operation against its Black population through its educational, judicial, and prison systems, but most detrimentally through a covert national campaign of psychological manipulation and control. A modern sophisticated system that uses the psychology of deceit perpetuated through the national media that uses false statistics, mis-information, and negative propaganda media reports that are deliberately designed to assaults the Black psyche corrupting many African Americans’ sense of unity and cohesion and to tranquilize efforts on their behalf thus facilitating a setting where of which its Black population is more easier suppressed and exploited.
Although there are now today many wealthy and successful African Americans, greatly due to highly paid athletes and entertainers that benefit the White elites more than they do their own communities, the U.S. government now still conducts planned campaigns of extensive strategic psychological operations through the national media to influence the perception and climate of the nation towards the attainment of its governmental objective of maintaining its white dominance and controls.
Today’s modern system of psychological manipulation is so enthralling and sophisticated that it misleads many Blacks to believe that they are, themselves, their own worst enemies, therefore engendering an internalized aberration of self contempt that pulverizes Black unity and halts Black upward mobility. Moreover, it provides a more socially acceptable way to assure that the masses of African Americans remains the most racially devalued and most economical exploited and suppressed group in America. Furthermore, it is at the root of both the profound division and self hatred now afflicting so many Black Americans and is at the heart of internalized feelings of superiority that many whites possess. It is in fact so fundamentally detrimental to the Black human condition and psyche that it may even affect the extent to which many African Americans realize their full human potential. Moreover, this system of racism is so well fortified and so complete that Many African
Americans will disregard any disclosure of it as being outrageous and will even label other Blacks as being “racist” for merely calling attention to it. In fact, this method of racism is so proficient at damaging the Black self-perception that tragically it has become easier for many Blacks to accept the derogatory premise that the noted problems stem from innate inadequacies within themselves rather than that of being the case of a modern system of white institutionalized racism. While the official assigned title of this massive covert scheme remains classified, I however appropriately call it the Black Matrix”.

24 HOUR BLACK NEWS NETWORK COMING IN 2009
BLACK TELEVISION NEWS CHANNEL
When it launches in 2009, the Black Television News Channel (BTNC) will be a 24/7 cable news network that provides original news programming with a distinctly African-American perspective, filling a major gap in coverage of African-Americans by today’s mainstream media.
Created by J.C. Watts, a former Republican congressman from Oklahoma, the network is part of a multi-year carriage agreement with Comcast Cable. Initial distribution will be limited to Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, Washington, Atlanta and Baltimore.
As BTNC brings blacks news from their own points of view, it hopes to stem growth and maturation of black people who will not only be on-air talent but the ones making editorial decisions on what stories actually get covered. Watts said, “Our unique and vast content partnerships with African American newsmakers will provide our viewers live access to the stories and people in whom our viewers have a special interest.”

CROW AGENCY, Mont., May 19 (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama became an honorary member of an American Indian tribe on Monday and promised a proactive policy to help tribal people if he wins the White House in November.
The Illinois senator who is leading rival Hillary Clinton in their race for the party's presidential nomination, joined the Crow Nation, a tribe of some 12,100 members in Montana, taking on a native name and honorary parents in a traditional ceremony.
Obama, who would be the first black U.S. president, was "adopted" by Hartford and Mary Black Eagle and given a name which means "one who helps all people of this land."
"I was just adopted into the tribe, so I'm still working on my pronunciation," Obama told a crowd after stumbling over some of the native names.
"I like my new name, Barack Black Eagle," he said. "That is a good name."...

THE PROSECUTION OF GEORGE W. BUSH FOR MURDER
The Legal Framework for the Prosecution
That the king can do no wrong is a necessary and fundamental principle of the English constitution. -Sir William Blackstone, Commentaries on the Laws of England, 1765
No living Homo sapiens is above the law. -(Notwithstanding our good friends and legal ancestors across the water, this is a fact that requires no citation.)
With respect to the position I take about the crimes of George Bush, I want to state at the outset that my motivation is not political. Although I've been a longtime Democrat (primarily because, unless there is some very compelling reason to be otherwise, I am always for "the little guy"), my political orientation is not rigid. For instance, I supported John McCain's run for the presidency in 2000. More to the point, whether I'm giving a final summation to the jury or writing one of my true crime books, credibility has always meant everything to me. Therefore, my only master and my only mistress are the facts and objectivity. I have no others. This is why I can give you, the reader, a 100 percent guarantee that if a Democratic president had done what Bush did, I would be writing the same, identical piece you are about to read.
Perhaps the most amazing thing to me about the belief of many that George Bush lied to the American public in starting his war with Iraq is that the liberal columnists who have accused him of doing this merely make this point, and then go on to the next paragraph in their columns. Only very infrequently does a columnist add that because of it Bush should be impeached. If the charges are true, of course Bush should have been impeached, convicted, and removed from office. That's almost too self-evident to state. But he deserves much more than impeachment. I mean, in America, we apparently impeach presidents for having consensual sex outside of marriage and trying to cover it up. If we impeach presidents for that, then if the president takes the country to war on a lie where thousands of American soldiers die horrible, violent deaths and over 100,000 innocent Iraqi civilians, including women and children, even babies are killed, the punishment obviously has to be much, much more severe. That's just common sense. If Bush were impeached, convicted in the Senate, and removed from office, he'd still be a free man, still be able to wake up in the morning with his cup of coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice and read the morning paper, still travel widely and lead a life of privilege, still belong to his country club and get standing ovations whenever he chose to speak to the Republican faithful. This, for being responsible for over 100,000 horrible deaths?* For anyone interested in true justice, impeachment alone would be a joke for what Bush did.
Let's look at the way some of the leading liberal lights (and, of course, the rest of the entire nation with the exception of those few recommending impeachment) have treated the issue of punishment for Bush's cardinal sins. New York Times columnist Paul Krugman wrote about "the false selling of the Iraq War. We were railroaded into an unnecessary war." Fine, I agree. Now what? Krugman just goes on to the next paragraph. But if Bush falsely railroaded the nation into a war where over 100,000 people died, including 4,000 American soldiers, how can you go on to the next paragraph as if you had been writing that Bush spent the weekend at Camp David with his wife? For doing what Krugman believes Bush did, doesn't Bush have to be punished commensurately in some way? Are there no consequences for committing a crime of colossal proportions?
Al Franken on the David Letterman show said, "Bush lied to us to take us to war" and quickly went on to another subject, as if he was saying "Bush lied to us in his budget."
Senator Edward Kennedy, condemning Bush, said that "Bush's distortions misled Congress in its war vote" and "No President of the United States should employ distortion of truth to take the nation to war." But, Senator Kennedy, if a president does this, as you believe Bush did, then what? Remember, Clinton was impeached for allegedly trying to cover up a consensual sexual affair. What do you recommend for Bush for being responsible for more than 100,000 deaths? Nothing? He shouldn't be held accountable for his actions? If one were to listen to you talk, that is the only conclusion one could come to. But why, Senator Kennedy, do you, like everyone else, want to give Bush this complete free ride?
The New York Times, in a June 17, 2004, editorial, said that in selling this nation on the war in Iraq, "the Bush administration convinced a substantial majority of Americans before the war that Saddam Hussein was somehow linked to 9/ 11, . . . inexcusably selling the false Iraq-Al Qaeda claim to Americans." But gentlemen, if this is so, then what? The New York Times didn't say, just going on, like everyone else, to the next paragraph, talking about something else.
In a November 15, 2005, editorial, the New York Times said that "the president and his top advisers . . . did not allow the American people, or even Congress, to have the information necessary to make reasoned judgments of their own. It's obvious that the Bush administration misled Americans about Mr. Hussein's weapons and his terrorist connections." But if it's "obvious that the Bush administration misled Americans" in taking them to a war that tens of thousands of people have paid for with their lives, now what? No punishment? If not, under what theory? Again, you're just going to go on to the next paragraph?
I'm not going to go on to the next unrelated paragraph.
In early December of 2005, a New York Times-CBS nationwide poll showed that the majority of Americans believed Bush "intentionally misled" the nation to promote a war in Iraq. A December 11, 2005, article in the Los Angeles Times, after citing this national poll, went on to say that because so many Americans believed this, it might be difficult for Bush to get the continuing support of Americans for the war. In other words, the fact that most Americans believed Bush had deliberately misled them into war was of no consequence in and of itself. Its only consequence was that it might hurt his efforts to get support for the war thereafter. So the article was reporting on the effect of the poll findings as if it was reporting on the popularity, or lack thereof, of Bush's position on global warming or immigration. Didn't the author of the article know that Bush taking the nation to war on a lie (if such be the case) is the equivalent of saying he is responsible for well over 100,000 deaths? One would never know this by reading the article.
If Bush, in fact, intentionally misled this nation into war, what is the proper punishment for him? Since many Americans routinely want criminal defendants to be executed for murdering only one person, if we weren't speaking of the president of the United States as the defendant here, to discuss anything less than the death penalty for someone responsible for over 100,000 deaths would on its face seem ludicrous.** But we are dealing with the president of the United States here.
On the other hand, the intensity of rage against Bush in America has been such (it never came remotely this close with Clinton because, at bottom, there was nothing of any real substance to have any serious rage against him for) that if I heard it once I heard it ten times that "someone should put a bullet in his head." That, fortunately, is just loose talk, and even more fortunately not the way we do things in America. In any event, if an American jury were to find Bush guilty of first degree murder, it would be up to them to decide what the appropriate punishment should be, one of their options being the imposition of the death penalty.
Although I have never heard before what I am suggesting -- that Bush be prosecuted for murder in an American courtroom -- many have argued that "Bush should be prosecuted for war crimes" (mostly for the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo) at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands. But for all intents and purposes this cannot be done.
*Even assuming, at this point, that Bush is criminally responsible for the deaths of over 100,000 people in the Iraq war, under federal law he could only be prosecuted for the deaths of the 4,000 American soldiers killed in the war. No American court would have jurisdiction to prosecute him for the one hundred and some thousand Iraqi deaths since these victims not only were not Americans, but they were killed in a foreign nation, Iraq. Despite their nationality, if they had been killed here in the States, there would of course be jurisdiction.
**Indeed, Bush himself, ironically, would be the last person who would quarrel with the proposition that being guilty of mass murder (even one murder, by his lights) calls for the death penalty as opposed to life imprisonment. As governor of Texas, Bush had the highest execution rate of any governor in American history: He was a very strong proponent of the death penalty who even laughingly mocked a condemned young woman who begged him to spare her life ("Please don't kill me," Bush mimicked her in a magazine interview with journalist Tucker Carlson), and even refused to commute the sentence of death down to life imprisonment for a young man who was mentally retarded (although as president he set aside the entire prison sentence of his friend Lewis "Scooter" Libby), and had a broad smile on his face when he announced in his second presidential debate with Al Gore that his state, Texas, was about to execute three convicted murderers.
In Bush's two terms as Texas governor, he signed death warrants for an incredible 152 out of 153 executions against convicted murderers, the majority of whom only killed one single person. The only death sentence Bush commuted was for one of the many murders that mass murderer Henry Lucas had been convicted of. Bush was informed that Lucas had falsely confessed to this particular murder and was innocent, his conviction being improper. So in 152 out of 152 cases, Bush refused to show mercy even once, finding that not one of the 152 convicted killers should receive life imprisonment instead of the death penalty. Bush's perfect 100 percent execution rate is highly uncommon even for the most conservative law-and-order governors.

LIES OF AGGRESSION:THE BELLICOSITY & HYPOCRISY IN TEL AVIV
On May 15, the White House Moron, in a war-planning visit to Israel, justified the naked aggression he and Olmert are planning against Iran as the only alternative to "the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history."
But the White House Moron has the roles reversed. It is not Iran that is threatening war. It is Bush. It is not Bush who is appeasing. It is Iran.
Iran has not responded in kind to any of Bush's warlike moves and provocations. Iran has not sunk a single one of our sitting duck ships and has not given the Iraqi insurgents any weapons that would easily turn the tide of war against the US.
It is Bush, not Iran, who sounds like Adolf Hitler blustering and threatening. It is Bush's American Brownshirts, the neocons, who express the view: "what's the good of nuclear weapons if you can't use them."
It is the US that is funding assassination teams inside Iran and using taxpayer dollars to fund dissident and violent organizations opposed to the Iranian government. Iran is doing no such thing here.
It is members of the Bush Regime and US generals who continue to lie through their teeth about Iranian support for insurgents, for which they can supply no evidence, and about Iranian nuclear weapons programs, for which the IAEA inspectors can find no sign.
It is the US print and TV media that serves the Bush Regime as propaganda ministry for its lies of aggression.
All the war crimes that are being planned are being planned by Bush and Olmert.
What would George Orwell make of the Bush Regime's position that anything less than a direct act of naked aggression is appeasement?
The Chicago City Council has passed a resolution "opposing any US attack on Iran and urging the Bush Administration to pursue diplomatic engagement with that nation." But the White House Moron says diplomacy is appeasement. He learned this false equivalence from the neocon Brownshirts whose control over his administration has made America despised throughout the world, with the exception of Israel.
After broadcasting false claims for weeks from US generals and Bush Regime spokespersons that the US has "definite proof" in the form of captured Iranian weapons that Iranians were "responsible for killing American troops," the great free American media went silent when LA Times correspondent Tina Susman reported from Baghdad: "A plan to show some alleged Iranian-supplied explosives to journalists last week in Karbala and then destroy them was cancelled after the United States realized none of them was from Iran."
A people devoid of a media are sitting ducks for tyrannical government, which is what the US has.
What is the difference between Hitler's concocted excuses for his acts of naked aggression and the Bush Regime's plan to use a briefing by General Petraeus, with "captured Iranian weapons" as props, as proof of Iranian complicity in US deaths in Iraq as a means to break down public and congressional resistance to an attack on Iran?
Why has the Bush Regime suffered no consequences for this blatant attempt to orchestrate an excuse for another war?
Why have there been no consequences to the Regime for the blatant lies it told in order to attack Iraq?
Why has the Bush Regime suffered no consequences for its violation of US statutory laws against spying without warrants and against torture?
In the US criminal justice system, three strikes and you are out.
For the Bush Regime is there any limit on its lawless behavior?
How many strikes? A dozen? Thirty? Three hundred?
Is there a limit?

NEWEST EXPORT COMING FROM CHINA- THE PERFECTION OF A POLICE STATE
Thirty years ago, the city of Shenzhen didn't exist. Back in those days, it was a string of small fishing villages and collectively run rice paddies, a place of rutted dirt roads and traditional temples. That was before the Communist Party chose it — thanks to its location close to Hong Kong's port — to be China's first "special economic zone," one of only four areas where capitalism would be permitted on a trial basis. The theory behind the experiment was that the "real" China would keep its socialist soul intact while profiting from the private-sector jobs and industrial development created in Shenzhen. The result was a city of pure commerce, undiluted by history or rooted culture — the crack cocaine of capitalism. It was a force so addictive to investors that the Shenzhen experiment quickly expanded, swallowing not just the surrounding Pearl River Delta, which now houses roughly 100,000 factories, but much of the rest of the country as well. Today, Shenzhen is a city of 12.4 million people, and there is a good chance that at least half of everything you own was made here: iPods, laptops, sneakers, flatscreen TVs, cellphones, jeans, maybe your desk chair, possibly your car and almost certainly your printer. Hundreds of luxury condominiums tower over the city; many are more than 40 stories high, topped with three-story penthouses. Newer neighborhoods like Keji Yuan are packed with ostentatiously modern corporate campuses and decadent shopping malls. Rem Koolhaas, Prada's favorite architect, is building a stock exchange in Shenzhen that looks like it floats — a design intended, he says, to "suggest and illustrate the process of the market." A still-under-construction superlight subway will soon connect it all at high speed; every car has multiple TV screens broadcasting over a Wi-Fi network. At night, the entire city lights up like a pimped-out Hummer, with each five-star hotel and office tower competing over who can put on the best light show.
Many of the big American players have set up shop in Shenzhen, but they look singularly unimpressive next to their Chinese competitors. The research complex for China's telecom giant Huawei, for instance, is so large that it has its own highway exit, while its workers ride home on their own bus line. Pressed up against Shenzhen's disco shopping centers, Wal-Mart superstores — of which there are nine in the city — look like dreary corner stores. (China almost seems to be mocking us: "You call that a superstore?") McDonald's and KFC appear every few blocks, but they seem almost retro next to the Real Kung Fu fast-food chain, whose mascot is a stylized Bruce Lee.
American commentators like CNN's Jack Cafferty dismiss the Chinese as "the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years." But nobody told the people of Shenzhen, who are busily putting on a 24-hour-a-day show called "America" — a pirated version of the original, only with flashier design, higher profits and less complaining. This has not happened by accident. China today, epitomized by Shenzhen's transition from mud to megacity in 30 years, represents a new way to organize society. Sometimes called "market Stalinism," it is a potent hybrid of the most powerful political tools of authoritarian communism — central planning, merciless repression, constant surveillance — harnessed to advance the goals of global capitalism.

When Hillary Rodham Clinton questioned rival Barack Obama's ties to 1960s radicals, her comments baffled two retired Bay Area lawyers who knew Clinton in the summer of 1971 when she worked as an intern at a left-wing law firm in Oakland, Calif., that defended communists and Black Panthers.
"She's a hypocrite," Doris B. Walker, 89, who was a member of the American Communist Party, said in an interview last week. "She had to know who we were and what kinds of cases we were handling. We had a very left-wing reputation, including civil rights, constitutional law, racist problems."

OBAMA DRAWS RECORD CROWD OF 75,000 IN PORTLAND
Senator Barack Obama has seen his share of large crowds over the last 15 months, but his campaign said they have not approached the numbers gathered along the waterfront here right now.
The campaign, citing figures from Duane Bray, battalion chief of Portland Fire & Rescue, estimated that 75,000 people are watching him speak.
The scene suggests this is not an exaggeration. The sea of heads stretches for half a mile along the grassy embankment, while others watch from kayaks and power boats bobbing on the Willamette River. More hug the rails of the steel bridge that stretches across the water and crowds are even watching from jetties on the opposite shore.

ASTROLOGERS CONVERGE IN DENVER TO PREDICT THE NEXT PRESIDENT
Presidential race in the stars for astrologers
DENVER (AP) -- Picking a winner of the presidential contest is front and center at what's being billed as the largest astrologers' convention in years.
More than 1,500 astrologers from 45 countries have descended on Denver, site of the Democratic National Convention in August, for the "United Astrology Conference: Rockin' the Universe."
The gathering concludes Tuesday with a panel predicting a presidential winner in November.
Key to those picks: Astrological charts for John McCain, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. And integral to those charts: The candidates' exact birth times.
A hush fell over the convention hall late Thursday when Dallas astrologer Joni Patry announced a birth time for Obama - one she said she got from a client with connections to the campaign: Aug. 4, 1961, at 7:11 p.m.
McCain's birth time was embedded like a gold nugget in a Mother's Day campaign ad. His mother, Roberta, mentioned that her son was born Aug. 29, 1936, at 11 a.m.
"All the astrologers are like, `Wow,'" Patry said. "As an astrologer getting his birth time, that's everything."
Clinton's birth time remains a moving target.
"I think they're hip to us and just don't want us to know that information," joked astrologer Shelley Ackerman, who will serve on Tuesday's panel.
Accurate birth times are essential for astrologers devising charts of the moon, stars and planets they use to predict the future - or the race. Ackerman said McCain's ad changed his known birth time by at least two hours, wreaking havoc with predictions on his presidential aspirations. Other astrologers give other birth times for Obama.
Birth data are rated for accuracy and shared among astrologers through Web sites such as http://www.astrodatabank.com .
Ackerman and others insist their profession's work is as accurate, if not more so, than many polls. They note pollsters wrongly predicted Obama winning New Hampshire's Democratic primary.
"With astrology, I guess, there's just more to it," Ackerman said.
They also cite a history of high-profile practitioners.
Rose Mary Woods, President Nixon's secretary, passed along "national security forecasts" from astrologer Jeane Dixon to the commander-in-chief. First lady Nancy Reagan consulted with astrologer Joanne Quigley in the White House, according to former chief of staff Donald Regan.
During World War II, British intelligence hired an astrologer, with little success, to predict Hitler's actions.
"We are part of a cycle of nature, between the sun and the moon, the planets and the stars," Ackerman said. Then she paused to reflect on the current world situation.
"It's funny how in this age of reason, we've gotten unreasonable. We have gotten out of touch with our own natural rhythms of heaven and earth."
Only 25 percent of Americans believe in astrology, according to a 2005 Gallup USA survey. That doesn't phase the Denver conventioneers.
"More people believe in it now," said Lynne Palmer, a former dancer and astrologer since 1957 based in Las Vegas. "Fifty-one years ago, if you mentioned astrology, you had a big fight on your hands. ...Now you can ask, `What's your sign?' and people will tell you."
So who's going to win in November?
Patry predicts McCain, based on his chart, which she said appears stronger than Obama's.
Ackerman declined to reveal her pick. But she did say Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are top Democratic and Republican vice presidential hopefuls, based on their charts.
Hakan Kirkoglu, an astrologer from Istanbul, Turkey, dumped the candidates' charts and looked instead at the Iraq war. He sees a change - possibly a withdrawal of U.S. troops - in 2010.
"It means if Obama becomes president, Iraq would take over the priorities," Kirkoglu said.
A Q&A WITH NEW YORKS FIRST BLACK GOVERNOR DAVID PATTERSON
EDITORS NOTE:WE NEED TO HOLD HIM TO THESE PROMISES
Below are the answers to the tough questions that My Harlem presented to State Senator David A. Paterson, Minority Leader
Arts and Culture Questions
1) Would the candidate consider recognizing the “creative arts” as an industry cluster like the states of Oregon, Washington, and Massachusetts and why?
Yes. New York City’s Economic Development Corporation should play a larger role in supporting this sizable and growing part of the economy because these fields currently are not a meaningful part of the City’s economic development strategy. Industry clusters improve the connections between clusters and university research, workforce programs, data collection processes, public policy, and other supporting institutions and systems.
New York City's creative core is made up nearly 12,000 businesses and non-profits and provides employment to more than 300,000 people. In recent years, creative industries have added jobs at a considerably faster rate than the overall City economy.
Although creative activity may be the closest thing to a natural resource in New York City, it is also a little-understood and long-overlooked economic asset. A Creative Arts Industry Cluster designation would provide a geographic concentration of inter-connected companies and institutions working in common.
Firms and workers in the cluster could draw competitive advantage from their proximity to competitors, a skilled workforce, specialized suppliers, and a shared base of knowledge about the creative arts industry.
Recognizing the creative arts as an industry cluster can propel effective public policy, supportive academic institutions, appropriate workforce training programs, and other infrastructure to support regional competitiveness and lead to a better environment for creative arts industries.
2) How would the candidate promote and capitalize on New York's ethnic diversity?
I have been a consistent and dedicated supporter of artists, arts organizations, and the preservation of New York State’s many historic treasures throughout my tenure as a State Senator representing Harlem and as Democratic Leader of the State Senate. I would seek to promote and capitalize on New York’s ethnic diversity through supporting arts and cultural institutions and individuals. Following is a sampling of my efforts to promote ethnic diversity through arts and culture:
· I sponsored a law that will provide financing for the Museum of African American Cinema, Inc. (MAAC) to build a facility to house the archives and collections of three major African American institutions: the New York State Black Films & Video Archives, the International Agency for Minority Artists Affairs and the Harlem Media Center. The MAAC is the most prestigious depository of historical films, videos, documents, photographs, publications, costumes, posters, scripts, props, sound recordings, records, personal items and artifacts of African Americans in movies, television and on stage. The collections are considered in the class of the Library of Congress.
· I sponsored a law that established the Heights Heritage Area, set its boundaries and provided for its historic development features. The law will enable the community to keep history alive through State parks designation, which will allow the region to attract needed funds to improve public landscape, market and promote local businesses and institutions, and spur economic growth to attract new businesses and increase tourism.
· I created the Senate Minority Task Force on the Arts and Cultural Affairs in April 2006 and appointed as its chair Senator Jose Serrano, who has had extensive experience working in the management of not-for-profit theatre. The Task Force aims to explore topics such as arts funding in the State and the impact of arts on economic development.
· I sponsored legislation to create the People’s History Project. The Project would allow entities such as historical societies, ethnic groups, and churches, to nominate for marking sites representing significant individuals or places in our State’s history. Passage of the legislation also would ensure that these individuals and historical events are recognized in educational curricula.
· In the early 1990’s, I organized New York’s diverse communities into the Task Force for the Oversight of the African Burial Ground in Manhattan, and spearheaded the successful efforts to ensure that the Burial Ground’s physical and spiritual artifacts were treated with deserved respect and reverence.
· In each of the years I have served as Leader I have consistently called, through alternate budgets and budget responses, for the full restoration of funds that were cut from arts, parks and historic preservation budgets.
· I routinely have secured discretionary funding to further the work of the diverse arts’ groups operating in his district, and indeed in many areas of the State, like the American Ballet Theatre’s “Make A Ballet School Program,” previously located at the Frederick Douglass Academy.
· I am aware of the myriad issues surrounding the arts and historic preservation communities through the many groups that have traveled to Albany in support of arts funding, economic development and capital construction. Those groups have included: the New York City Arts Coalition, Harlem School of the Arts, Inc., New Moves, Inc., Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Exploring the Arts, Inc.
· I joined my Harlem colleagues in fighting to preserve the century-old Catholic church at West 118th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue. In its day, the church was a mainstay of Harlem political and religious life, famed for gorgeous stained-glass windows, vaulted ceilings and main altar. The efforts successfully led to the historic property being designated one of “Seven to Save” by the Preservation League of New York State.
3) Would the candidate support more funding to NYC & Co. so that the organization can offer more tourism services? Right now NYC & Co. is limited to convention and some general tourism services.
I would support increased funding to NYC & Co. New York City has vested its tourism marketing in NYC & Co. - a nonprofit entity that is funded by member dues – in the amount of more than $6 million in City funds and a share of hotel tax revenues. Tourism drives the City’s and State’s economic engine. On the State level, we need to evaluate agency work in the cultural and heritage tourism business. I would establish a Cultural Tourism Review Task Force to test for measurable and accurate performance, return on investment, leadership, innovation, overlap and duplication.
4) Would the candidate push the State Legislature to support and approve the creation of Cultural Arts Districts throughout New York?
Yes. I fully support S.3317/A.3433 to create the New York State Arts and Cultural Development Areas Demonstration Program. As a lifelong advocate of the arts, I particularly appreciate the intention that localities with strong local arts communities are often home to creative thinkers in all industries. Luring artists of all kinds to regions with affordable housing and studio space ensures that they and their fans will support local businesses that sell food, supplies and other services.
5) Would the candidate advocate the State Legislature to support a “state” historic tax credit matching the already existing federal tax credit?
Yes. I voted in favor of S.8392/A.11987 to establish an income tax credit for the rehabilitation of historic properties, and which included two types of credit: historic structures credit and historic home ownership rehabilitation credit. The bill has been awaiting signature by the Governor, and I urge him to sign the measure. Preserving our cultural heritage is paramount in protecting and maintaining the public commons.

Genetically Modified Foods Unsafe? Evidence that Links GM Foods to Allergic Responses Mounts
By Jeffery Smith | globalresearch.ca
Genetically modified (GM) foods are inherently unsafe, and current safety assessments are not competent to protect us from or even identify most dangers. Overwhelming evidence to support this conclusion is now compiled in the book Genetic Roulette: The documented health risks of genetically engineered foods, which presents an abundance of adverse findings and theoretical risks associated with GM foods.1
The book documents lab animals with damage to virtually every system studied; thousands of sick, sterile, or dead livestock; and people around the world who have traced toxic or allergic reactions to eating GM products, breathing GM pollen, or touching GM crops at harvest. It also exposes many incorrect assumptions that were used to support GM approvals. This article, excerpted from my book, summarizes some of the findings related to allergic and immune responses.
GM Soy and Allergies
Soy allergies jumped 50% in the U.K. just after GM soy was introduced.2 If GM soy was the cause, it may be due to several things. The GM protein that makes Roundup Ready Soy resistant to the herbicide does not have a history of safe use in humans and may be an allergen. In fact, sections of its amino acid sequence are identical to known allergens.3
A portion of the transgene from ingested GM soybeans, along with the promoter that switches it on, transfers into human gut bacteria during ingestion.4 The fact that the transformed bacteria survives applications of Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate, suggests that the transgene continues to produce the Roundup Ready protein. If true, then long after people stop eating GM soy they may be constantly exposed to its potentially allergenic protein, which is being created within their gut. (This protein may be made more allergenic due to misfolding, attached molecular chains, or rearrangement of unstable transgenes, but there is insufficient data to support or rule out these possibilities.1)
Studies suggest that the GM transformation process may have increased natural allergens in soybeans. The level of one known allergen, trypsin inhibitor, was 27% higher in raw GM soy varieties. More worrisome, it was as much as sevenfold higher in cooked GM soy compared to cooked non-GM soy.5 Not only is this higher amount potentially harmful, the finding also suggests that the trypsin inhibitor in GM soy might be more heat stable and, therefore, even more allergenic than the natural variety.6
It is also possible that changes in GM soy DNA may produce new allergens. Although there has never been an exhaustive analysis of the proteins or natural products in GM soy, unpredicted changes in the DNA were discovered. A mutated section of soy DNA was found near the transgene, which may contribute to some unpredicted effects. Moreover, between this scrambled DNA and the transgene is an extra transgene fragment, not discovered until years after soy was on the market.7 The RNA produced is completely unexpected. It combines material from all three sections: the full-length transgene, the transgene fragment, and the mutated DNA sequence. This RNA is then further processed into four different variations,8 which might lead to the production of some unknown allergen.
Another study verified that GM soybeans contain an IgE-binding allergenic protein not found in nonGM soy controls, and that one of eight subjects who showed a skin-prick allergic reaction to GM soy had no reaction to nonGM soy.9 Although the sample size is small, the implication that certain people react only to GM soy is huge.
The increased residue of Roundup herbicide in GM soy might contribute to increased allergies.10 In fact, the symptoms identified in the U.K. soy allergy study are among those related to glyphosate exposure. The allergy study identified irritable bowel syndrome, digestion problems, chronic fatigue, headaches, lethargy, and skin complaints including acne and eczema.2
Symptoms of glyphosate exposure include nausea, headaches, lethargy, skin rashes, and burning or itchy skin.11 It is also possible that glyphosate’s breakdown product, AMPA, which accumulates in GM soybeans,12,13 might contribute to allergies.
Finally, mice fed GM soy had reduced levels of pancreatic enzymes.14,15 When protein-digesting enzymes are suppressed, proteins may last longer in the gut, allowing more time for an allergic reaction to take place. Any reduction in protein digestion could therefore promote allergic reactions to a wide range of proteins, not just to the GM soy.

THE FIRST GENETICALLY MODIFIED HUMAN EMBRYO:ADVANCE OR ABOMINATION??
Scientists have created the first genetically modified human embryo.
What does this mean to you?
Led by Nikica Zaninovic, researchers at Cornell University added a green fluorescent protein to an embryo left over from assisted reproduction. They destroyed the embryo five days later. It is believed to be the first documented genetic modification of a human embryo.
British newspaper The Times reports that Zaninovic's feat was announced at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine annual meeting in 2007, but was only publicized recently when the United Kingdom's reproductive technology regulators reviewed the research. The House of Commons is about to consider legislation permitting this and other controversial reproductive technologies, such as the creation of chimeras -- human-animal hybrid embryos.
The research raises a number of thorny ethical questions. Though adding a fluorescent protein was not aimed at enhancement, but rather to illuminate developing embryos, scientists say that modified embryos could be used to research human diseases. They say embryos wouldn't be allowed to develop for more than a few weeks, much less implanted in a woman and brought to term.
If the embryos were allowed to develop, genetic modifications -- which would be permanent and passed to future generations -- might prevent disease. Modifications might also be used for other reasons -- physical appearance, intellectual prowess, personality -- though the necessary science remains hypothetical at this point. Developing such techniques would necessarily entail trial-and-error and risk-taking with human life.
David King, director of Human Genetics Alert, a bioethics watchdog group, told The Times that
"This is the first step on the road that will lead to the nightmare of designer babies and a new eugenics. The HFEA is right to say that the creation and legalisation of GM embryos raises ‘large ethical and public interest issues’ but neglects to mention that these have not been debated at all."
So let's have that debate. What do you think, Wired Science readers? Should genetically modified embryos be used in research, but not reproduction? Both? Neither?
